I have seen this talked about alot lately it seems. I have personally not done it yet but my brother did and said if the package had items they would use he would do it again.
Angel Food Ministries is the site. You can read all about how they started, what they do and where you can participate in your local area. Basically, they provide a low cost food package once a month. There is no minimum or maximum income requirement etc. It is for anyone who wants to buy it. The cost is $30 for the basic package and on average you get about $70 worth of food. Not a bad idea to use as a base each month to supplement your grocery shopping. You can view the current month, and usually the next month, menu on the website. In addition, if you choose to participate, after purchasing the basic package (this is required) you can also take advantage of other specials they have offered.
