So here is what I am thinking...

Ok so I have gone WAY over my budget for the month and still have about 85.00 worth of shopping to do tomorrow (lots of great deals on stuff we need). I also purchased the Angel Food boxes ($51) I talked about in an earlier post this week.

BUT...

I should have to do VERY VERY little shopping in February.

Here is the thing. In my line of work (merchandising) this is our SLOWWWW time. Read: Me no workie, me no makey money! And December/January is a HUGE time for us work wise so I was making double what I normally do. So part of my spending was in thinking ahead for February. The deals made it smart for me to buy now to save later. Make sense?

So although I will come in WAY over budget for January, I am hoping that by the end of February this has evened out a TON.

Mainly for February it will be fresh items (veges and fruit, mainly for the little one as she loves raw veges and fruit and I ENCOURAGE the heck out of that!), perishables like Milk and a few odds and ends. I will be doing Triples at HT but so far don't see a ton of stuff so that should be a small trip. And because I did Angel Food, that comes on 2-21 which will be the real money crunch time right before hubby gets paid again so that will be very handy!!!

I will be interested to see how it all works out.

A happy couponer....

AND..... YAY!!!!! My freezer is here and cleaned and waiting to be plugged in. We want to give it a few hours to settle after moving it. I am SOOOO excited!!!!

Kroger, Walmart and Target TOYS OH MY!!!

First- Target put the clearance toys at 75% off yesterday. I did not find out until late last night. Figured I was still in good shape because who would know to check on a Thursday. Went today to the New Bern Target (where last August I RACKED UP at 75%off) and they were WIPED out of nearly everything. Just last week they had rows and rows of 50% off. I was stunned. So hurry up and go if you are hoping to get some good deals. Not much left around here. I did snag a few things but not near as much as I was hoping.

Second- Kroger. Well I was able to do 2 transactions to take advantage of the Mega Sale by being very creative. I got all the coupons I wanted to double by carefully planning the scenarios so I had no more than 1 doubling Q per item per transaction. They cannot stop me from saving LOTS OF MONEY DARN THEM!!! LOL

Ok, for the breakdowns-

FREE PIZZA!

For those who have Sam's Club Memberships (like me, who just did the $25 GC deal!) from now until 2-1 you can APPLY (you DO NOT have to be approved) for a Sam's Credit Card and get a FREE 16 inch Take and Bake Pizza! (while supplies last so hurry on over there!).

Guess what we are having for supper tonight?!?!

Also, I have been trying to decide the best way to spend the rest of that $25 gift card at Sam's. I didn't want to use it on items I KNEW I could get cheaper with coupons and sales somewhere else. Well today I found one thing! I LOVE Balsamic Vinegar and in the time I have been couponing have NEVER seen a coupon or even a sale on it!

Sam's Club-
1 Take and Bake Pepporoni Pizza 6.88
1 34 oz (OMG THAT IS HUGE) bottle of Balsamic Vinegar 7.26

Total- 14.14
Saved- 6.88
Used GC- 7.26

Krogers today..

Well I went by Kroger's today and saw NEW signs up for their coupon policy. A bit better but still not right for those of us trying to do things the right way.

I am paraphrasing here but:
You can use 4 like coupons for 4 like items per but only the 1st one will double. The other 3 are taken at face value. *sigh* No limits on total coupons, just 4 per like item.
They even have an example listed. LOL
At the bottom it does say that you can ask for the store manager, Mr Ken Jeffries if you have any questions so I will keep at it until they allow 3 or 4 per like item to double in one transaction!!!

But..
While there I got a GREAT deal on fresh mushrooms. I love Manager's Special. They are one of , if not the ONLY, grocery store in town that actually marks down their produce.

I got:
4 packs of Organic Whole White Mushrooms @ 1.59 each (regularly 3.50 each)
3 pack of Whole Baby Bellas @ 1.59 each (regularly 3.50 each)
1 pack of Sliced Portabellas @ 1.79 (regularly 3.50 each)
1 bag of Organic Broccoli and Baby Carrots @ 1.49

Total before would have been roughly- 32.00
Saved- 17.30
Spent-14.70

Remember mushrooms freeze AMAZINGLY when cooked!!!!

I have worked out some deals for the last few days of the buy 10 get $5 off mega event. We will see tomorrow and Saturday if they work or not!

Busy Busy Busy

Busy at work this week and trying not to go any further over the monthly budget! So posting will be light until Friday/Saturday.

Angel Food Ministries

I have seen this talked about alot lately it seems. I have personally not done it yet but my brother did and said if the package had items they would use he would do it again.

Angel Food Ministries is the site. You can read all about how they started, what they do and where you can participate in your local area. Basically, they provide a low cost food package once a month. There is no minimum or maximum income requirement etc. It is for anyone who wants to buy it. The cost is $30 for the basic package and on average you get about $70 worth of food. Not a bad idea to use as a base each month to supplement your grocery shopping. You can view the current month, and usually the next month, menu on the website. In addition, if you choose to participate, after purchasing the basic package (this is required) you can also take advantage of other specials they have offered.

February in particular is very appealing to me so I will be doing it this time. For me locally, my order has to be placed by 2/15 (if ordering thru the website) and my pickup date is 2/21 between 10-11am.

The February Menu is: $30.00

1.5 lb. Sirloin Strip Steaks(4 x 6 oz.)
2 lb. Tray Pack Chicken Breast
1 lb. Boneless Pork Chops
2 lb. Breaded Chicken Nuggets
28 oz. Salisbury Steak Entrée
12 oz. Sliced Bacon
1 lb. All-Meat Hot Dog
1 lb. Stir Fry (Broccoli, Red Peppers & Onions)
1 lb. Carrots
8 oz. Breakfast Cereal
32 oz. 2% Shelf Stable Milk
35 oz. Crinkle-Cut Fries
7.25 oz. Mac ‘n Cheese
1 lb. Rice
1 lb. Bean Soup Mix
1 Dozen Eggs
Dessert

I will also be getting the Fresh Produce Special Package this month: $21.00

3 lb. No. 1 Premium Idaho Baking Potatoes
3 lb. No. 1 Premium North Carolina Sweet Potatoes
2 lb. No. 1 Premium New Crop Western Grown Yellow Onions
9 oz. California Premium Raisins
1 lb. Premium California Grown Carrots
1 head Premium Fresh Green Cabbage
3 lb. New Crop Tree-Ripened Red Delicious Apples
2 each Premium Washington State Anjou Pears
1 each Premium Golden Sweet Pineapple
3 lb. New Crop Premium Florida Tree-Ripened Valencia Oranges

I have checked around and I believe these were $15 originally (seems I remember looking at them and thinking there was no WAY I was paying that much for them. LOL)Plus the sale price sticker underneath the current one says $10 making me think they were marked down by $5 first.

One thing I have noticed...

That even with a house FULL (or overflowing as my husband would call it!) with food and HBA and other items I have in my stockpile, I am still hugely frugal about using stuff. I guess I would have thought that since I had 12 boxes of Ziplock baggies in the pantry I wouldn't even think of using one. But I do! I am probably more frugal now than before.

I guess it is because I know how HARD I have worked to get those good deals and build that stockpile up. I do NOT want to EVER have to pay retail or even just sale prices on things that I know I can get for CHEAP if I had a coupon to go with it! LOL

And I am sooo excited about my soon to be cheap freezer I am about to bust!! NOW I can start making meals ahead and freezing them. And baked items. And meat deals. And all of those FREE frozen veges I haven't had room for!!

Target

Well I went to Target today to take advantage of those great freebies I have seen posted around. Alas apparently not all Targets are created equal. None of the items were on sale as posted or my store didn't even carry them!

I refused to give up though. I found Special K Bars 6ct(Blueberry flavored only at my store) Price Cut to 2.54. (The scanner was scanning them at 2.99 so be sure to pay attention on how things scan at the register!!!). With the Special K deal in mind from this post (and using the Q's linked there) I did the following:

6 boxes of Special K Bars marked to 2.54
- 3.00/3 x 2
-1.00 x 6

Total- 18.12
Saved- 14.70
Used GC- 3.42
Spent- 0.00

Even if I didn't have the GC (from a previous Target deal where you got a $5 GC for purchasing specific items) I would have done this deal. .54 a box is an excellent price!

Still need to go to Walgreens tomorrow to do the Orajel deal, but other than that I didn't see a ton of stuff in the grocery store ads to buy this week. Mainly gonna be using up stockpile items I think.

The basic point of this post is that not every deal will go as planned. Some, like the one today, won't be anything at all like you planned! But don't give up and you can still get a good deal during that shopping trip or on the next one!

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

YAY!!!

I just found and purchased a 20 cu ft Upright Frigidaire Freezer, 5 years old, from Craigslist for.... $125.00!!! Comparable sizes/models made by them are around $600-$700!!!! I am sooooo excited. Now I can really take advantage of some of the great freezer items deals which in the past I have had to pass on because of no freezer space.

A little cooking..

Taking advantage of the snowy weather (for us this is very rare and pretty much stops everything in its tracks for a few days).

I cooked up a big 9x13 Chicken, Cheese, Broccoli and Rice casserole yesterday for dinner. This will serve as one more dinner and a few lunches over the next several days. I love these types of meals. I mixed everything in the actual cooking dish so there was zero cleanup. And because I add the broccoli to it I have everything in one dish for a complete meal! Cheap too. All prices are approximate but:
1 package of chicken tenders (2.00)
1 package of cheese/broccoli preseasoned rice mix(.30)
1 cup of rice (.05 to free)
2 cups of shredded cheese (1.75)
1 box frozen broccoli (.77)
1can of chicken broth (.30)
1/2 cup of milk (.20)
Salt, pepper etc (.10)
= 5.47 for 2 dinners and a few lunches

Today I cooked up 5 pds of ground beef bought on sale at HT on Monday. I LOVE having precooked ground beef in the freezer. I use it in a ton of things:
Spaghetti Sauce
Vegetable Beef Soup
Tacos
Manwich
Hamburger Helper
Add to Zataranns Rice mixes for one pot meals.
I cook it up in a big pot on the stove with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chopped frozen onion and tons of minced garlic. Once cooked I was able to seperate it out into 6 quart sized freezer bags. Now it is all cooked and well seasoned for whatever recipe I need it for 6 meals!

I am also cooking the Ribeye Roast I got on sale for tonights dinner and then sandwiches for at least 3-4 days.

So basically I have my cooking done pretty much thru the weekend and even farther ahead! Just have to add sides or other ingrediants to make several meals.
Rough cost= 42.00
Total Meals= 14-15
Per meal cost= 3.00 (most will equal out to be around $4-$5 by the time you add sides etc)

Snow...

which means I am happily in my house with absolutely NO plans of leaving until at least Thursday. I grew up around the stuff but have learned over the years, if you do not HAVE to be out driving then keep your hiney at home.

Sams Club

So I went to Sam's Club yesterday to take advantage of the promotion this week. From the 15th-21st you can sign up for a new membership and get a $25 Gift Card! And with their 100% money back guarantee (including membership fees if you cancel at ANY TIME) it makes that a nice little deal. I can try it out, although I do not think I will probably keep it as I cannot justify the $40. I think it will be hard to save $40 vs what I can pay with sales and coupons at other stores. And if I can't save AT LEAST $40 then it is not worth it but I will try it out, use my $25 gift card and then if I am not happy I can get my $40 back as well!!

I did get one really good deal yesterday. The Barbie doll was originally around $35-$40 at various retailers (sign said 28.99 original price at Sam's)before Christmas and I refused to pay that. Yesterday at Sam's Club they had it clearanced to $9.81. It is now stocked away for next year!!! My daughter is just now really getting into Barbie's and loved that movie this year!

Wellll...

Now, at the end of the two weeks and just before they expire I am seeing multiple posts on several blogs that the CVS coupon was not intended to be available online. I will not use anymore of them now that CVS has officially said they were never intended to be available through the online version of the newspaper. I hate that CVS doesn't do more to prevent this sort of stuff. I used these thinking they were ok with it because it stayed available online!

If you used them too don't feel bad. I know many others did too. And I refuse to feel guilty about it. I waited several days, saw the link to the coupon on MANY larger *legit* couponing blogs and gave CVS a chance to remove the ad from the online paper. I also never saved the coupon to my computer and printed, always printed from the newspaper link. I did everything I could think of to make sure it was a *legit* Q first. I also NEVER once had a store blink an eye at taking the coupons, whereas in the past I have had problems using coupons actually emailed direct to me! The Q's always scanned and they were happy to accept them.

Oh well, lesson learned I guess.

BTW, Also hearing rumors that the Colgate IP for $1.50 off is not legit so take that for what it is worth.

Just for fun

I decided to gather up as much of my CVS loot as I could from the last 2 weeks. There are some things missing. We have used some of the Papertowels already and some of the food was eaten, others are in the process of being used etc. But this is the bulk of it.

Ugggh no shopping yet this week

and busier than I care to be at work right now sooooo posting is a bit light. Add a sick little one into the mix and uggg can this week hurry up and get over with please!!!

That is ok though. I was a bit worried about my budget and this *no time to shop* thing is a good thing in a way. LOL

I should be back to shopping in a day or so!

A few quick notes.

- Did you know that you can cook a whole ribeye the same way you do a standing rib roast??? And it turns out perfect! I love cooking standing rib (special treat on holidays) but I HATE paying for the bones. I feel like for a 4 pd roast I am paying for a 1 lb of it to be BONES. So this past week Food Lion had Ribeyes on sale for 5.99 pd ( they seem to run a deal like this about once every 2 months or so at various stores) and decided to try it out. I asked the butcher to cut a 3-4 pd roast for me which they were more than happy to do. I got it for the 5.99 sale price.
Cooked the following way (Paula Dean's Perfect Rib Roast recipe):
1 4 pd standing rib (or in this case, whole boneless Ribeye)
salt
pepper
whatever other seasonings you want (we use garlic powder and onion powder)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Put seasonings on roast.
Put in oven for 1 hour.
Turn oven off and leave in oven for 3 hours. DO NOT OPEN OVEN DOOR for any reason during this time.
About 30-45 mins before serving, turn oven back on to 375 and reheat. (Can add other items to oven for cooking during this time. Ok to open door after 3 hours.)
Pull out roast and let rest for 15-20 minutes before cutting.

SOOO GOOD!

And the leftovers? Put whole roast in fridge (we only slice off what we are going to eat the first night) and then next day use electric knife or home *deli-style* slicing machine to cut really thin and use for the BEST roast beef sandwiches you have ever had!

3.5 lb roast cost $21.00
-Had for hot prime rib/steak style dinner first night.
-On day 2 of leftovers for sandwiches and will get a 3rd day out of it easily!
$5 or so per meal for a cut of meat like that is incredible!

- Also signed up for my free Suave shampoo!! Now I just need to remember to get all of my rebates filled out this weekend and get them in the mail!

Hmmmmm....

I think the $300 a month might be tough sometimes... LOL

I might have to rethink how I am doing this...

I might have to wait and see how things work out after a few months. Maybe you spend more some months then others based on sales? This month is hard because of all of the sales. In the long run it is going to save me a ton of money. And since I am including EVERYTHING in my totals I might need to expand the total monthly allowance.

I might need to consider this month as an investment month. I am realllly building my stockpile. I think it is because with the economic situation in the country, and the type of job I have I am nervous. While things are fine right now, I have been in this business long enough to see companies shut their doors and walk away with no warning. In the past it was easy to get another job in this industry but for the last 2-3 months I have noticed not a ton of new stuff.

I guess I will wait and see in a month or two how things seem to be playing out and make adjustments if needed then.

Too much bought and not enough time to list

Plus you guys would be bored, lots of regular type stuff at different grocery stores. Meat on sale that sort of stuff. I will hit the highlight though.

Kmart is doubling up to $2 face value coupons. That means coupons could be worth $4!!!
I stopped by and bought 4 Visine Eye Drops and 3 bags of Goodlife Cat Food.

Helpful Tip

Do you live in a small(ish) town or do your shopping one area all of the time? Do you have a *regular* set of drugstores/grocery stores? Do you have employees that , altho not coupon haters, may be a little cranky some times when you use all of those coupons?

If so, take the time to get to know them. Are they maybe interested in coupons and the negativity towards you is a little bit of jealousy of all those great deals you get all the time??? (Obviously don't ask them this!! LOL) Here is a couple of examples of how myself and another couponer I know (Hey Tipsy!!) turned things around in a store that could have gone either for us or against us!

1- Tipsy generall shops at a CVS on the other side of the town we live in, one where I had not had good experiences in. Being that store is not really convenient to me it was no big loss, I have one just up the road. But for her, this was the best location to stop at. After shopping there all of the time and getting to know the folks, she still felt that occasionally there could be a twinge of resistance when a coupon would beep or cause problems. But she kept going and then on Thanksgiving day when going in to get all of those great ECB deals, she took them a plate of homemade cookies. Just because she felt bad for them having to work on Thanksgiving. They were HUGELY touched and appreciative and if she has any problems there in the future I would be very very surprised.

2- I love my CVS but.. there were DEFINITELY cashiers I perferred to see when I walked in over others. One in particular is a younger girl who would just give all kinds of grief about coupons. Scrutinizing every single thing knowing I would end up with little to no OOP usually and a huge list of ECB's. But I have kept a smile on my face and super nice every time. Yesterday while in their getting all of my CVS cheapies, one of the assistant managers asked me where I got all of my coupons. I explained that I bought alot of Sunday papers for the inserts and used the online sites to find tons of printables. The *cranky* cashier said that she had missed getting the Sunday paper this week and was so mad at herself. So I told her that next time I came in I would bring her a set as I had bought 7 and had MORE than enough. I figured a 1.50 investment could help smooth out some of that crankiness. I also printed a few of the $3 off coupons for her. When I went in today with the 5 inserts and CVS Q's she actually came around and HUGGED ME! I was so happy to be able to help her out and by doing so I can already tell that I have made my future couponing there so much easier! I also found out while talking to her that she trys to use coupons but *it never seems to work out like she thought it would*. That sound familiar??? LOL I explained that for most of us *couponers* we were in the same boat UNTIL we found the forums and blogs out there where others had found the deals or figured them out and posted about them. I told her that I would bring her a list of good sites that will help her get the hang of this *couponing thing* . Again she was sooo excited and I think I may have brought someone into the *frugal* fold!

Moral of these stories? Be nice and spread the couponing love! Have coupons you NEVER use (For me it is makeup as I do not wear it.) but while talking to the cashier you find out she LOVES makeup? Take a few minutes to clip those out for her each week and drop them off to her. It takes only a few minutes of your time but helps someone else out and , let's be honest here, benefits you by making the cashiers your biggest ALLIES!

CVS Tuesday.. lol

So for today's CVS shopping trips. First let me say that it was apparently a fluke the other day that the most expensive item rang 50% off not the cheapest one. So make your deals based on an expensive one and then one that will ring 50% off that is cheaper or same price if you are getting stuff that will throw you under the 3.00 mark with the coupon.

Really cool Mac and Cheese Recipe

I love good, old fashioned, southern mac and cheese. Not that creamy stuff but the kind with real cheese and milk that is not saucey but more of a crumbly texture almost. I found the COOLEST recipe to make this.
Using my nearly free Muellers Elbow Macaroni from Triples, 2 packages of shredded cheese from the freezer from when they were on sale 3/$5, some Land O Lakes margarine that was on sale with Q from a few months ago and 4 cups of milk. It made for an amazing rich and tasty mac cheese. AND it was cheap too, roughly around 5.00 for a huge 9x13 casserole full!!!

Now for the super COOL part. You do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT cook the macaroni first!!!

I know, craziness right??? Insanity ??? Well it works!

I got the original recipe from Allrecipes.com. But as I am prone to do, I tweaked it a bit. If you follow the original recipe you only use one package of cheese but we like it extra cheesy. (Using one package of cheese would have also cut way down on the price for it too.)

Since I tweaked it so much I am going to post how I did it, but please see the original recipe linked above as well.

MomIsCrazy's EASY Mac and Cheese

6 Tbs of margarine
(Seasonings are to taste , I do not measure typically, just eyeball it knowing what my tastes are. Just remember a whole box of elbow macaroni is ALOT and needs alot of seasoning in my opinion.)
1 to 1 1/2 tsp. of each of the following:
Salt
Pepper
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Dry Mustard
Paprika
1 box of UNCOOKED Elbow Pasta
4 cups shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
4 cups 2% Milk
(I added a touch more to make sure it had enough, maybe 1/4 cup more or so, just eyeball it.)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Put 6 Tbs margarine in 9x13 pan and place in oven until completely melted.
3. Take pan with melted margarine out of oven and dump whole box of elbow macaroni UNCOOKED in. Add seasonings to taste. Mix together well to cover all the pasta with the seasonings and melted margarine.
4. Add cheese in a layer on top of pasta. Do not stir.
5. Pour in milk. Still NO stirring at this point. Just pour milk in making sure it covers the cheese and pasta.
6. Place in oven at 350 for around 60 mins. About 30 minsutes in I took the pan out and stirred everything together, then place back in oven for 30 more minutes.
7. After the hour total cooking time the top will be golden and bubbly. Remove from oven and let sit for a few minutes.

How much easier does it get than that???? All mixed in the pan you cook it in!!! No preboiling the pasta!! Again, this is NOT a creamy version of mac and cheese. Some of you will know what I am referring to when I say this is the old time southern version of mac and cheese. I LOVE IT! If you make this, let me know what you thought of it!

Get used to the CVS posts, probably daily!

At least until the 17th I will be visiting CVS almost daily to use those $3/1 CVS brand coupons. I also noticed on my receipt that the register *appears* to be taking the 1/2 off discount on the second item scanned, not the cheapest one!!! So if doing this deal be sure to give them the cheapest one first to scan, then the more expensive item in case this wasn't a fluke!!! I also stopped at Walgreens for my free/moneymaker Electrasol.
Sooooo for today it was:

Oh how I love thee CVS!

It amazes me CONSTANTLY how they pay me to take merchandise out of the store...
CVS is running a sale on all CVS brand products, Buy One Get One 50% off. There is a 3.00/1 CVS brand purchase coupon floating around. (Only one coupon per customer, this as always will vary depending on your local store. Mine allows more but in seperate transactions only.) Also there was a $5/$25 purchase coupon sent in email to people signed up on the CVS website. I highly recommend signing up with all the stores websites! And finally, my CVS accepts competitor transfer/new RX coupons. I had one for $30 Gift Card at Rite Aid. And finally, CVS is getting ready to implement their new planograms for the store so TONS of merchandise are marked down from 25% to 75% off. And tons of that are the CVS branded items!! 2009 Goals?

I have been reading on alot of blogs about goals and resolutions. Since I am so new to couponing I am unsure how successful I will be but.. My goal is no more than $300 month on groceries/drug store purchases. That breaks down to roughly $75 week, $10.71 per day for 3 people. I am hoping to do even better than that but we will have to see. I am also considering the *cash only* method to pay for those items. Pulling $300 out at the first of the month and then only using that money to pay at the store. I wonder if it will matter? I may wait and see before trying that.
